Set on the south-west coast, Puerto Andratx is a pretty coastal resort, stylish and upmarket, with a glittering marina.
Puerto de Andratx is an attractive, unspoilt resort situated at the foot of a valley, about 5km (3 miles) from the charming old town of Andratx. Set within rocky cliffs, this laid-back resort enjoys a stunning setting - at the southern end of the Serra Tramuntana mountain range, with high cliffs surrounding the port, and lush green countryside and olive groves all around.
Like it's old town neighbour, Puerto Andratx is an exclusive kind of place - not a destination for package holidays, this resort tends to attract independent travellers and second home residents. The resort is packed with stylish private villas, which climb the hillsides of the valley toward Andratx town. The area is known to attract the rich and famous, and many famous names own villas here.
Puerto Andratx was originally a small fishing village, which has undergone some development in order to cater for the tourist trade, however it remains a very pretty and charming place. The magnificent marina attracts many luxury yachts, and there are many upmarket establishmentsaround the marina area, and in the resort generally, catering for the wealthy visitors attracted to the port.
Unlike many of Majorca's resorts, Puerto Andratx does not have much to attract beach lovers - there is a tiny little beach called Ses Bassetes but at just 30m long, well, it doesn't really count! For beach lovers, the delightful Camp de Mar is only a short drive away, just 3km down the coast.
There are still working fishing boats that work from the harbour in Puerto Andratx, and each day, the catch of the day can be found served up in local restaurants. You'll find many great restaurants around the marina area, so there are plenty of opportunties for sampling great fresh fish dishes and local cuisine while taking in the amazing views. There is also a promenade lined with shops, restaurants and bars, so there is plenty of choice for dining and relaxing with a drink to soak up the atmosphere on the waterfront.
It's worth noting that prices for meals and drinks can be a slightly higher here than in many other resorts, probably a reflection on the classy, upmarket feel of the Puerto Andratx and the status of the visitors it tends to attract. Nontheless, it is a fantastic resort, with a good atmosphere - a great place for people-watching, if you are so inclined!
It is worth a trip into the neighbouring old town of Andratx - Wednesdays are a good day for a day trip as there is a lively street market. From Andratx town, the views down and across the port area are breathtaking. The church at the top of the hill in town is a particularly good viewing point.
Puerto Andratx and Andratx are ideal locations for hiring a private villa or apartment as a base for exploring the countryside around the south-west of Majorca. End the day with a taste of luxury, sipping drinks at one of the stylish seafront bars, and enjoying the impressive sunset. Bliss.
The town is situated roughly 35km (about 20miles) west of Palma Airport, with a reasonable transfer time of around 30-40 minutes, traffic permitting.
“Puerto Andratx is a small and exclusive resort for tourists who fancy a change from the usual package holiday resorts.”
